Laparoscopic robotic-assisted approach to pancreatoduodenectomy

Pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) is a technically demanding procedure. Although the laparoscopic approach has been done successfully, it reportedly offers no advantages over the open approach due to technical difficulties. We recently used the DaVinci robotic surgical system for this procedure and found it to be extremely helpful. This video presents our unique approach to PD. The patient was a 63 year-old woman with a 5 cm cystic lesion of the head of the pancreas. CT findings and cytology of the fluid suggested serous cystadenoma. She underwent laparobotic PD successfully. The procedure took 290 minutes with minimal blood loss. She was discharged on the 5th postoperative day. We conclude that laparobotic PD is feasible and reproducible, and may offer a better outcome in selected patients.
